UP Extends SIT Probe Into Ayodhya Ram Mandir Donation Thefts

Investigators have broadened the inquiry to five-year financial audits, forensic accounting and property and recruitment checks, raising the prospect of legal exposure for senior Trust figures.

Overview

  • The Uttar Pradesh government extended the Special Investigation Team’s mandate and set a July 15 deadline for its report as the probe moved from an FIR to a wider multi-week inquiry.
  • Police and the SIT have seized cash, foreign currency and jewellery from suspects, including Rs 20,39,000, USD 1,121, about 11 grams of gold and 375 grams of silver from accused Avinash Shukla.
  • Aayodhya courts granted a 24-hour police remand for Avinash Shukla and investigators have arrested multiple people linked to donation counting and handling as part of a criminal probe.
  • Senior Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra officials including Champat Rai, Dr. Anil Mishra and Gopal Rao were questioned and have denied direct responsibility for counting and money management.
  • The inquiry now includes chartered-accountant led audits of five years of Trust records, bank and QR-code transaction tracing, scrutiny of about 125 contested recruitments and probes into linked land and asset transfers.
