UP Deputy CM to Lead Airlift of Piprahwa Buddha Relics to Russia for Kalmykia Exhibition

The weeklong Elista display advances India’s cultural diplomacy after the relics were brought back in July from an aborted Hong Kong auction.

Overview

  • Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya will head a 35-member delegation departing on September 23 aboard an Indian Air Force aircraft.
  • The Ministry of Culture’s exhibition will run in Elista, Republic of Kalmykia, from September 24 to October 1.
  • The National Museum in Elista will present reproductions and a short documentary on the Piprahwa relics from September 25 to 28.
  • The relics trace to an 1898 discovery at Piprahwa in Uttar Pradesh and are reported to include bone fragments, crystal caskets, gold ornaments, gemstones and a sandstone reliquary with Brahmi inscriptions.
  • Officials say the showcase is intended to deepen cultural and political ties and bolster India’s soft power, with Uttar Pradesh planning tourism upgrades around Piprahwa, Sarnath and Kushinagar.
