UP Demolishes 130 Illegal Structures Along Nepal Border in Ongoing Crackdown

Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directives district magistrates are using the new Waqf Act and revenue code provisions to target unregistered religious structures within 10 km of the Nepal frontier.

Overview

  • The operation spans seven districts along Uttar Pradesh’s 5,000 km open border with Nepal, including Pilibhit, Shravasti, Balrampur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj.
  • As of August 7, officials report 130 demolitions, 198 sealings and 223 legal notices served against unauthorised constructions.
  • Shravasti district leads the drive with 149 encroachments identified, 37 demolished and 140 sealed under the campaign.
  • Targets include unregistered mosques, madrasas, Eidgahs and mazars built on both government and private land within the 10 km border zone.
  • Authorities invoke the 2024 Waqf Act and Section 67 of the Revenue Code to reclaim land and address security concerns in the multi-month operation.
