Overview
- The Irrigation Department, which began a 45-day shutdown from May 8 to June 15, is installing the last four of ten new vertical gates.
- A SCADA system will add real-time sensors and digital controls to run the gates and track river levels for quicker emergency action.
- Officials say a cofferdam upstream is holding the river at the 105.6 metre pumping level so city taps keep flowing during the works.
- The new steel gates were built at the ISO-certified Bareilly workshop and measure 18 metres by 4.95 metres in two sections weighing 16 and 18 tonnes.
- Built in 1980–1983, the barrage supplies lakhs of residents, and the upgrade is designed to bolster flood control as monsoon season approaches.
