Unseasonable Mid-November Warmth Grips European Russia as the North Turns Wintry

Moscow hit 10.6 °C on Saturday, signaling a spell of temperatures far above normal into next week.

  • Hydrometcenter chief Roman Vilfand said mid-November in Moscow will be unusually warm for the month, roughly 6–8 °C above normal, with largely dry conditions and no snow expected through the end of next week.
  • Saturday became Moscow’s warmest day of November so far at 10.6 °C, with daytime readings around 9–11 °C and only spotty light showers in parts of the region earlier in the day.
  • Forecasters reported the Northwestern Federal District will cool by Sunday, with Murmansk expecting wet snow and strong gusty winds from an active Barents Sea cyclone that will worsen road conditions.
  • In Komi, Vorkuta is already near −15 to −20 °C with the far northeast dropping to −27 °C at night, and a cyclone on Monday is forecast to bring heavy snow, blizzards, and winds up to 16–21 m/s with drifting on roads.
  • The Sverdlovsk region is set to establish snow cover in the coming days, reaching 10–13 cm in much of the north and east and up to 20 cm in the far north by late month’s second ten-day period, with winter crops reported to be wintering satisfactorily after a brief −18 °C cold snap on November 4.
