Unlicensed Teen Driver Reaches 160 km/h on B.C.’s Highway 97 With Passengers Unrestrained

BC Highway Patrol’s swift action averted a potential tragedy, underscoring risks of unsupervised teenage driving

Police impounded a minivan driven by a teen in the Okanagan, after he was stopped for doing 160 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Overview

  • The 16-year-old driver was stopped at 4:30 a.m. on June 4 while travelling 160 km/h in a 100 km/h zone near Pelmewash Parkway in Lake Country.
  • None of the passengers wore seatbelts and two were lying on the van’s back floor beside yard tools and a lawn mower.
  • Officers issued $955 in violation tickets for excessive speed, driving without a licence and carrying too many passengers.
  • The unlicensed teen lacked parental permission and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
  • Cpl. Michael McLaughlin warned that the stop prevented “an imminent tragedy” and urged parents to reinforce road-safety rules with their teens.
