University of Vigo Approves Medicine Pact, Clearing Way for Galicia’s Clinical Teaching Overhaul

The approval triggers a monitoring commission due by January 21 to set the rollout timetable.

Overview

  • UVigo’s governing council ratified the rectors’ November agreement by assent in an extraordinary session.
  • Fifth-year practicums will start in Vigo and A Coruña in 2026–2027, with fifth-year theory in 2027–2028 and full fourth year in 2028–2029.
  • Students will complete years 1–3 in Santiago, then may opt for fourth and fifth with a planned split of 200 in Santiago, 100 in Vigo and 100 in A Coruña from a 403-place intake.
  • A monitoring commission must be created before January 21 with one month to set milestones, deliver an economic study, approve fifth-year teaching plans and validate local teaching units.
  • New faculty hiring will be split 50–50 between USC and the local universities, UVigo will keep processing an own-degree Plan B backed by an individual exit clause, and the USC medical faculty and Vigo’s mayor remain opposed.
