University of Michigan Student Lucas Mattson, 19, Found Dead After Search in Extreme Cold

Police say there are no signs of trauma or foul play pending autopsy results.

Overview

  • Mattson was last seen around 1 a.m. Friday leaving a Delta Chi fraternity party on Hill Street wearing a T-shirt and jeans without a coat.
  • He was reported missing about 4:30 p.m. Friday, and a nearly 20-hour search by Ann Arbor police and university safety units, including a drone team, followed during sub-zero conditions tied to Winter Storm Fern.
  • His body was located at approximately 12:05 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Cambridge Road, a short distance from where he was last seen.
  • The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death, a process officials say could take 60 to 90 days.
  • Interim President Domenico Grasso offered condolences, noted Mattson attended the party as a guest, mobilized counseling resources, and asked campus leaders to retrace the weekend’s events to identify prevention steps.
