University of Michigan-Flint Nursing Student Killed in Murder-Suicide by Ex-boyfriend, a Resident Doctor
Gina Bryant, 25, was reportedly kidnapped by Justin Wendling, 26, at her home during a lunch break, after which he led her to his car, shot her at a LaSalle truck stop, and then fled to Iowa, where he committed suicide; Bryant had moved out of their shared house over allegations of abuse a few weeks prior.
- Gina Bryant, a 25-year-old University of Michigan-Flint nursing student, was kidnapped and fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend, Justin Wendling, who was a resident doctor. Wendling later killed himself in Iowa.
- Wendling had waited inside Bryant's home and kidnapped her when she came home for her lunch break. Co-workers became suspicious when they began receiving 'odd text messages' from her phone.
- Bryant had been in a relationship with Wendling for about 11 months, during which they lived together. Bryant moved out of their shared residence at the end of September after revealing to her family that he had been abusive towards her.
- Security footage and witness accounts confirmed Wendling's actions both at the time of Bryant's kidnapping and at the truck stop where he shot her. Wendling called his parents to confess to the murder and his intention to commit suicide, leading them to alert authorities.
- Bryant's death and the circumstances surrounding it have heightened concerns about an observed increase in domestic violence cases, as noted by Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham. Wendling's place of work, the Ascension Genesys Hospital, confirmed their cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.
