University of Hawaiʻi, U.S. Army Garrison Hawaiʻi Sign Pact to Expand Conservation Work and Workforce Training

Signed at Schofield Barracks, the pact routes UH expertise through the Army Natural Resources Program to support readiness through ecosystem stewardship.

Overview

  • Leaders finalized the intergovernmental support agreement on Sept. 16, 2025 at the Schofield Barracks Seed Lab to expand environmental services on Army lands.
  • The agreement formalizes UH’s role via the Army Natural Resources Program Office to deliver projects that improve ecosystem resilience on training areas while supporting operational readiness.
  • Partners say the framework will scale conservation work across Oʻahu sites and add hands-on training and career pathways for UH students, researchers and technicians.
  • The collaboration builds on joint efforts since 1995 that include invasive species control, monitoring, and the cultivation and reintroduction of endangered plants and animals.
  • The announcement comes during unresolved state lease reviews, as the Board of Land and Natural Resources has rejected Army environmental impact statements for lands with leases expiring in 2029.
