Overview
- The ceremony took place on December 5 at the Enrique Díaz de León auditorium in Guadalajara as part of the FIL, where Rector Karla Planter conferred the distinction with Executive Vice Rector Héctor Raúl Solís Gadea in attendance.
- Serrat told the audience he "fell into the vice of singing" for the sheer pleasure of it and recalled learning songs as a child while singing with his mother.
- He voiced gratitude and affection for Mexico, noting a relationship of more than five decades, and said he hopes "the Mexico of books can one day defeat the Mexico of guns."
- The General University Council justified the honor by describing his oeuvre as profoundly humanist, committed to memory, dignity and critical thinking, and Planter praised his ability to link music with poetry and linguistic diversity.
- Attendees greeted Serrat with a standing ovation as he received the diploma and donned the commemorative medal during the FIL 39 event.
