Universal Studios Hollywood Puts CityWalk Inside Security Perimeter

Installed to mirror other Universal and Disney destinations, three new metal-detection hubs aim to ready operations for larger event-driven crowds.

Overview

  • Universal opened the new security configuration mid-June, which on Wednesday placed CityWalk inside a secured perimeter and activated three screening hubs around the resort.
  • The three checkpoints sit at the main entry plaza, beside the Jurassic Parking structure near NBC Sports Grill & Brew and Mr. BBQ, and near Margaritaville in the former iFly space.
  • Operational routing has changed on site: guests from Jurassic Parking are directed to new escalators to reach the main checkpoint, some legacy gates remain for the Frankenstein lot and valet, and former CityWalk access points from Jurassic Parking are blocked.
  • A Universal spokesperson said the changes add metal-detection hubs adjacent to parking structures to align with other parks, a move reporters link to handling higher visitor volumes tied to the FIFA World Cup and planning for the 2028 Olympics.
  • The shift ends the long-standing practice of free access to CityWalk before screening, which will alter first impressions for visitors and may prompt further small operational tweaks as the rollout is evaluated.
