Universal Retires TapuTapu at Volcano Bay, Ends Virtual Lines Effective Oct. 1

The move shifts the water park from a virtual-queue model to standard lines after the wearable defined operations since 2017.

Overview

  • Guests visiting Volcano Bay from October 1, 2025 no longer receive a Tapu wristband at check-in and are not required to book Virtual Line times for slides.
  • Introduced at the park’s 2017 opening, TapuTapu was designed to let visitors hold spots in virtual queues and interact with locations around the park.
  • Coverage has long noted reported issues with the system, including extended waits despite reservations, wristbands falling off on attractions, and technology glitches.
  • Universal has scheduled a full-park refurbishment that will close Volcano Bay from October 26, 2026 through March 24, 2027.
  • Universal has not detailed the scope of the work, and TouringPlans reports it does not expect new attractions and anticipates slide replacements or upgrades.
