Universal Reopens Stardust Racers After Fatality, Tightens Mobility Rules

Universal says tests observed by state officials, the manufacturer and an independent engineer verified the coaster’s systems.

Overview

  • The ride returned to service on Oct. 4 after an internal technical and operational review that Universal says found systems working properly and staff following procedures.
  • The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says the case remains an open death investigation following the Sept. 17 incident involving 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala.
  • The chief medical examiner ruled Zavala’s death an accident caused by multiple blunt impact injuries.
  • Universal updated safety signage and procedures, including new language that guests using mobility devices must be able to walk independently, and strengthened guidance that riders must independently support their body.
  • Zavala’s family and attorney Ben Crump condemned the reopening, demanded preservation of evidence and independent inspection, and cited prior injury complaints and a quickly settled lawsuit involving the same ride.
