Universal Pediatric Screening in High-Risk Community Uncovers Hidden Asthma, Housing Hazards

Researchers at AAP 2025 describe a universal clinic screen that uncovered undiagnosed pediatric asthma, prompting housing-focused follow-up.

Overview

  • MedStar Health’s Kids Medical Mobile Clinic integrated an Asthma Risk and Control Screen into well-child visits for 650 children ages 2 and older between January 2021 and December 2024.
  • Among children without a prior diagnosis, 35% reported at least one asthma risk factor on the screen, and 24% of that subgroup were subsequently diagnosed with asthma after clinical evaluation.
  • Overall, about 8% of all screened children were found to have previously undiagnosed asthma, and 18% already carried an asthma diagnosis.
  • The screening documented poor housing quality in roughly 41% of the population, rising to about 52% among those who screened positive, with common home triggers such as mold and pests.
  • The findings were presented as an abstract at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2025 meeting in Denver, and the clinic has established home-remediation and medical-legal partnerships to address identified risks.
