Universal Moves 'Shrek 5' Release to June 30, 2027

The studio reshapes its 2027 slate to avoid December competition in favor of summer family audiences.

Overview

  • Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have postponed Shrek 5 from December 23, 2026 to June 30, 2027, marking its second delay this year and roughly a one-year shift from the original July 2026 date.
  • An untitled Illumination event film has been advanced to April 16, 2027 to fill the vacated summer slot and recalibrate Universal’s 2027 calendar.
  • Original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz remain attached, Zendaya joins as Shrek’s daughter, and directors Conrad Vernon, Walt Dohrn and Brad Ableson are leading the project under producers Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri.
  • Voice recording and other production work for Shrek 5 continue while the studio has not offered an official explanation for the scheduling changes.
  • Eddie Murphy has confirmed that a standalone Donkey spin-off will begin production in September 2025, extending the Shrek universe beyond the main sequel.
