United Pilots Remote Baggage Screening on SydneySan Francisco Route

The CBP-backed pilot uses remote screening to let connecting flyers skip baggage recheck.

Overview

  • United’s International Remote Baggage Screening is live on daily SYD–SFO flights for travelers connecting beyond San Francisco.
  • Passengers clear CBP at SFO and proceed directly to TSA without reclaiming checked bags, unless CBP selects them for inspection.
  • Early results show more than 160 passengers per flight using the process with reported time savings of up to 45 minutes.
  • The trial is limited to trips originating in Sydney on the SYD–SFO service, and United says it plans to add more routes in the coming months.
  • United is running the pilot with CBP, TSA, Sydney Airport, BagCheck and Brock Solutions, joining similar 2025 initiatives from American and Delta that use remote image review to streamline connections.
