United Nations Awards Dag Hammarskjold Medal to Two Fallen Indian Peacekeepers

In a solemn May 29 ceremony at UN headquarters, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres honored 57 peacekeepers killed last year serving under the UN flag.

Overview

  • Brigadier Amitabh Jha, who oversaw ceasefire arrangements for UNDOF in the Golan Heights, and Havildar Sanjay Singh, deployed with MONUSCO in the Democratic Republic of Congo, received the medal posthumously.
  • India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, accepted the Dag Hammarskjold Medals on behalf of the families of the fallen peacekeepers.
  • Established by UN Security Council Resolution 1121 in 1997, the Dag Hammarskjold Medal honors military, police and civilian personnel who make the ultimate sacrifice in peacekeeping operations.
  • India is one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping, having provided over 200,000 personnel to 49 missions since 1948 and currently deploying more than 5,300 uniformed members worldwide.
  • During the International Day of UN Peacekeepers ceremony, Guterres also laid a wreath for all fallen peacekeepers and presented awards for Military Gender Advocate and UN Woman Police Officer of the Year.
