Overview
- The 20-day ultimatum issued by the UNC and allied Naga bodies expired on August 16 without any reversal of Free Movement Regime restrictions or fencing work.
- A 10-member UNC delegation led by Ng Lorho met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan to demand revocation of the FMR changes and that border fencing be halted or realigned along traditional Naga boundaries.
- Governor Bhalla assured the delegation that their concerns have been forwarded to the Union Home Ministry and that talks between the Government of India and the UNC will be arranged this week, urging restraint during the process.
- Despite political engagement, about 9 km of fence have been completed at Moreh and another 21 km are under construction along Manipur’s 398-km border with Myanmar.
- The UNC has warned it will intensify its protest movement if its demands are not met, raising the prospect of escalated unrest in the border regions.
