Overview
- United Flight 803, a Boeing 777-200ER bound for Tokyo, lost power in its left engine shortly after a 12:20 p.m. ET departure and returned to Dulles safely around 1:20–1:30 p.m.
- All 275 passengers and 15 crew members were unharmed, and airport fire crews quickly put out brush fires ignited near the runway during departure.
- Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and airport officials said a piece of the engine cover separated and caught fire, contributing to the ground blaze.
- Air traffic control audio and tracking showed the jet dumping fuel over Virginia to reduce landing weight before the emergency return.
- The FAA said it will investigate, the NTSB is gathering information, and United arranged a replacement aircraft and used a United Club lounge to assist customers.
