Unions Launch $1 Million PAC to Revive Las Vegas Film Studio Bill

A labor-backed campaign seeks to restore generous film tax credits ahead of a possible special legislative session.

Overview

  • Twenty-one Southern Nevada trade unions formed the Nevada Jobs Now PAC to press for reinstating AB238 during a special session that Gov. Joe Lombardo has said he intends to call without setting a date or agenda.
  • The PAC says it has $1 million for a public information effort and will host a town hall on Oct. 15 at Las Vegas Ballpark to discuss the proposal.
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros. Discovery and Howard Hughes plan a 31-acre Summerlin Studios complex in Las Vegas, and a project labor agreement has been negotiated for a wider 83-acre entertainment district.
  • Union leaders promote projections of roughly 19,000 construction jobs, 17,000 permanent jobs and more than $3 billion in annual economic impact tied to the studio project.
  • A May analysis by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development estimated Nevada would recoup about 52 cents per dollar of tax credits and calculated $1.425 billion in net credits over 15 years, a concern that contributed to AB238 failing to get a Senate vote in June after procedural delays.
