Overview
- The GMB warns that widespread closures of council-run pools across the UK are increasing drowning risk for young people.
- A coalition of local-government and leisure bodies reports roughly 500 closures since 2010, nearly half in the past five years, with more than 34,000 square metres of water space lost.
- The report says about 60% of remaining pools are beyond their expected lifespan or need refurbishment.
- It also finds 30% of Year 7 pupils cannot confidently swim 25 metres, up from 27% in 2017/18.
- The Department for Culture, Media and Sport says it has pledged £400 million and is working with the sector on how to deploy the funding, as leaders call for urgent, targeted investment.
