Union Rebuts Mamata on DVC Dam Releases as Bengal Braces for Flood Risk

Union officials say reservoir operations followed the manual with 70,000 cusecs released, countering the chief minister’s charge of an unannounced deluge.

Overview

  • Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Paatil, citing the Damodar Valley Reservoir Regulation Committee, said Maithon released 42,500 cusecs and Panchet 27,500 cusecs, totaling about 70,000 cusecs.
  • The DVC issued an orange flood warning and estimated the discharged water would reach downstream stretches of West Bengal between October 3 and October 6.
  • Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged a cumulative release exceeding 150,000 cusecs and called it a manufactured disaster, a claim publicly rejected by the Union government.
  • DVRRC officials said they sought inputs from West Bengal’s Irrigation and Waterways Directorate before the releases and received no comments, adding that operations followed the reservoir regulation manual.
  • The irrigation department reported rising river levels and district alerts in vulnerable areas, while Union officials said the Lower Damodar level at Harinkhola was below the warning mark and monitoring continues alongside IMD rain forecasts.
