Overview

  • All 337 tonnes of long-abandoned toxic material from the defunct Union Carbide factory in Bhopal has been reduced to ash at the Ramky Group incineration facility in Pithampur
  • The full-scale burn ran from May 5 until the night of June 29–30 at rates up to 270 kg per hour under directives from the Madhya Pradesh High Court
  • Central and State Pollution Control Board experts oversaw real-time emissions monitoring throughout the process and confirmed pollutant levels remained within safety limits
  • Official analyses confirmed the waste comprised soil, reactor residues, pesticide and naphthal remnants with no methyl isocyanate gas or radioactive particles present
  • Ash and other residues have been sealed in leak-proof sacks in a secured shed while special landfill cells are built for their scientific burial by December under court supervision
