Union Cabinet Approves 8th Pay Commission to Revise Salaries of Central Government Employees

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission on January 15, 2025.
The commission will review and recommend changes to the salary structure, allowances, and benefits for central government employees and pensioners.
Approximately 50 lakh government employees and 65 lakh pensioners are expected to benefit from the revised pay structure.
The recommendations are anticipated to include an updated 'fitment factor,' potentially increasing the minimum basic salary from ₹18,000 to ₹51,480 per month.
The commission's recommendations are expected to take effect starting January 1, 2026, continuing the decennial tradition of pay revisions.
