UNIFIL Says Israeli Drones Dropped Explosives Near Peacekeepers in South Lebanon

The mission reports blasts during rubble-clearing work after prior notice to the IDF, calling the actions a violation of Resolution 1701.

Overview

  • UNIFIL reported several drone-delivered explosives over a 48-hour period near Maroun ar-Ras, including at positions held by peacekeepers and Lebanese soldiers.
  • Peacekeepers documented a sequence of blasts: a detonation near an excavator about 500 metres away, an explosion roughly 30–40 metres from one team, and a grenade detonating about 20 metres overhead at another site.
  • The force said it had informed the IDF in advance about the clearance operations and immediately demanded that the firing stop.
  • UNIFIL condemned the incidents as violations of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and said such actions obstruct its mandated monitoring role.
  • Ireland’s Defence Forces said all members of the 126th Infantry Battalion are safe with no injuries, as the mission continues under a scheduled drawdown to conclude in 2027.
