UNIFIL Reports Israeli Fire Near Peacekeepers on Two Patrols in South Lebanon

The mission says the shots originated from IDF positions south of the Blue Line.

Overview

  • Peacekeepers reported 15 small-arms rounds followed by about 100 machine-gun rounds landing roughly 50 metres from separate patrols.
  • No injuries or damage were recorded in either incident, which UNIFIL described as a concerning trend and a breach of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
  • UNIFIL assessed the fire came from Israeli positions and immediately used liaison channels to request that the shooting stop.
  • The mission said Israeli authorities had been informed in advance about the movement and activities of the UN patrols in the area.
  • Context from recent months notes repeated incidents near UN positions and continued Israeli strikes despite a 2024 US-brokered truce that called for withdrawals from south Lebanon.
