UNIFIL Accuses Israel of Drone Attack Near Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon

The claim highlights rising risks to the UN force ahead of a Security Council-ordered 2026 end to the mission.

Overview

  • UNIFIL said Israeli drones dropped four grenades near its personnel on Tuesday morning during operations close to the border village of Marwahin.
  • One grenade landed about 20 meters from staff and vehicles, with three more detonations within roughly 100 meters.
  • Peacekeepers were clearing roadblocks that impeded access to a UN position, and the mission says Israeli forces were notified in advance.
  • UNIFIL called the incident one of the most serious against its personnel and property since the November 2024 truce and a grave violation of Resolution 1701 and international law.
  • The UN notes the force has operated in Lebanon since 1978 with more than 10,800 personnel, and the Security Council decided last week to end the southern Lebanon mission by the end of 2026.
