Unicode Consortium Greenlights New Orca, Landslide and Panicked-Face Emojis

A Bitkom survey finds 82 percent of Germans use emojis in messages, with younger users far more likely to include a symbol in every message

Overview

  • Eighty-two percent of Germans reported using emojis in emails, chats and other text messages, with 21 percent including them in every message.
  • Under-30s were more than twice as likely to use an emoji in every message—34 percent compared with 12 percent of those over 65.
  • Heart-related emojis topped the list at 17 percent, followed by laughter symbols at 15 percent and gestures such as thumbs-up or clapping at 12 percent.
  • Despite 62 percent of respondents experiencing emoji-related misunderstandings, 54 percent often reply using only emojis and 44 percent believe the icons improve comprehension.
  • The Unicode Consortium has approved a new set of emojis—including an orca, a landslide and a panicked face—for release on devices in early September.
