UNICEF: Child Displacement in Haiti Nearly Doubles to 680,000 as Gang Control Widens

UNICEF says only an urgent surge in protection plus funding can keep a generation from lasting harm.

Overview

  • The new UNICEF report finds more than 1.3 million people are displaced nationwide, including 680,000 children, nearly twice last year’s tally for minors.
  • Over 6 million people now need assistance, including 3.3 million children, with UNICEF warning its appeal for shelter, healthcare, education and clean water is severely underfunded.
  • Roughly 2.7 million people live in areas held by armed groups, with Port-au-Prince described as almost entirely under gang control, contributing to pervasive fear and underreporting.
  • The UN verified 2,269 grave violations against 1,373 children in 2024, including killings, injuries, sexual violence and forced recruitment by gangs.
  • Education and basic services are unraveling, with more than 1,600 schools affected and 1,080 closed this year, leaving at least one in four children out of class as disease risks rise in crowded shelters; last month the UN Security Council approved expanding a UN-backed anti-gang force to up to 5,500 personnel.
