Overview
- UNESCO specialists Hervé Huot‑Marchand and Mari Yasunaga led a mission to Mexico from May 12 to 15 to evaluate adult and youth literacy efforts as part of preparations for International Literacy Day.
- The delegation visited sites in Mexico City and in Chiapas, including Tuxtla Gutiérrez, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, San Juan Chamula, Santiago El Pinar and Chiapa de Corzo to observe local programs in action.
- Mexican authorities presented the state program “Chiapas Puede” and the federal initiative “Nombrando y Contando al Mundo” as community‑based, intercultural models aimed at young people and adults excluded from formal schooling.
- In Santiago El Pinar the government delivered 150 literacy certificates to residents of the Altos Tsotsil‑Tseltal region after observers watched study circles and educational accompaniment in the communities.
- SEP and INEA leaders said the visit strengthens international recognition of federal and state literacy policies and prepares venues for International Literacy Day while underlining literacy as a tool to reduce inequality and expand access.
