Overview

  • The UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially inscribed Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee and the Königshaus am Schachen on July 12, 2025.
  • With this addition, Bavaria now boasts 11 of Germany’s 55 UNESCO World Heritage sites, more than any other federal state.
  • The four properties earned the designation for their exceptional universal value and 19th-century historicist architecture reflecting King Ludwig II’s visionary designs.
  • In 2024, the three principal castles drew over 1.7 million visitors, and officials expect UNESCO status to drive further international tourism.
  • Although the listing provides no direct funding, Bavaria is now legally bound to ensure long-term conservation and protection of these heritage sites.
