UNESCO Experts Back Listing of Italian Cuisine as Intangible Heritage

A political vote by UNESCO's intergovernmental committee in New Delhi on 8–13 December will determine the inscription.

Overview

  • UNESCO published its expert technical evaluation on 10 November recommending inscription of Italian cuisine on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • The intergovernmental committee meeting in India from 8 to 13 December will take the final decision, which can confirm, modify or overturn the recommendation.
  • Confirmation would make Italy the first country to have an entire national cuisine recognized as intangible cultural heritage.
  • Dossier curator Pier Luigi Petrillo said the submission was deemed well prepared while cautioning that the committee could still revise the outcome.
  • The same release addressed other elements including Swiss yodel, Cuban son, Japanese origami, Cypriot passito wine and Mexico's Passion of Christ, as Khaled El-Enany becomes UNESCO Director-General on 15 November.
