UNESCO Adds Córdoba’s Cuarteto to Intangible Heritage List

The New Delhi decision imposes new safeguarding duties on Argentine and Córdoba authorities.

Overview

  • The Intergovernmental Committee meeting in New Delhi on December 9 approved the inscription with unanimous support during its 20th session.
  • Argentina’s bid, filed as “Cuarteto: music, dance and lyrics in the city of Córdoba,” was assembled from 2022 by the Córdoba municipality with the Foreign Ministry and the National Culture Ministry.
  • The listing makes cuarteto the fourth Argentine element on UNESCO’s Representative List, alongside tango, filete porteño and chamamé.
  • UNESCO describes cuarteto as a dynamic, dance-driven genre born in 1943 in Córdoba, whose early orchestras featured piano, violin, accordion and double bass and later absorbed Caribbean rhythms and Afro‑Latin percussion.
  • Local leaders and artists celebrated the recognition and pointed to tourism, archives and teaching initiatives as priorities, with calls to protect the genre’s authenticity as visibility grows.
