Underweight Leveret ‘Bruno’ Set for Wild Release After Roadside Caesarean Rescue

Having grown to more than nine times his birth weight under round-the-clock Fishcross care, seven-week-old Bruno may soon be ready for release to the wild.

Overview

  • Dumfriesshire farmer Robert Craig performed an emergency roadside caesarean with a penknife on May 13 after striking a pregnant hare, delivering two leverets of which only Bruno survived.
  • Scottish SPCA officers Emma Totney and Shauni Stoddart stabilised the frail newborn at the scene before hand-rearing him for five days to minimise stress.
  • Bruno arrived at Fishcross National Wildlife Rescue Centre weighing just 80 g—below the typical 100–130 g for leverets—and has gained strength to exceed nine times that weight.
  • The SPCA’s Fishcross team provides 24/7 specialist care, monitoring Bruno’s progress and preparing for his imminent return to the wild.
  • The Scottish SPCA warns that untrained individuals should not attempt emergency surgeries on wild animals due to the risks and specialised skills required.
