Undertrial Beaten to Death by Fellow Inmates in Delhi Court Lock-Up

Delhi Police has formed investigative teams to question the accused, as bar leaders urge stricter segregation and security protocols for undertrial prisoners.

Overview

  • Aman, 24, was brought to Saket District Court on June 5 for a hearing when inmates Jitender and Jaidev attacked him inside Lock-up No. 5, causing fatal head injuries.
  • Police say the assault stemmed from a 2024 knife attack in which Aman allegedly wounded Jitender and his brother outside jail.
  • According to preliminary findings, the two accused banged Aman's head against the cell wall and then strangled him with their feet in front of other detainees.
  • Authorities have registered a murder case, sent Aman's body for post-mortem, and are questioning both suspects as part of a wider probe.
  • The Saket Court Bar Association cited a major security lapse in housing feuding inmates together and demanded risk assessments, smaller lock-ups and video-conferencing for high-risk prisoners.
