Undercover Video Shows N.C. A&T Staff Rebranding DEI After UNC Policy Repeal

Footage recorded in 2024, released today, is prompting advocacy groups to urge stricter enforcement of the system’s neutrality policy.

Overview

  • Accuracy in Media published hidden-camera clips of North Carolina A&T’s Office of Intercultural Engagement staff describing how programs continued through revised terminology and placement outside a formal DEI unit.
  • Assistant director Pascha Miller is heard saying the office was “not under the DEI office” and that staff “changed the wording of things” and avoided using the term “DEI.”
  • Office manager Michael Eccles said the word “diversity” was replaced with “competency” and described “creative naming,” while adding the team was “still pushing through” to serve students.
  • Assistant director Austin Horne called the UNC Board’s statute “very intentionally vague,” said one position was changed rather than eliminated at A&T, and noted campuses differ on how to reduce litigation risk.
  • The UNC System Board of Governors repealed DEI policies last year in favor of an institutional neutrality framework, Fox News requested comment from N.C. A&T, and AIM’s president urged lawmakers to impose tougher penalties and a Kansas-style ban.
