Under-Construction Rohini Building Collapses, Three Dead and Five Rescued

Rescue teams finished operations with investigators preparing technical and criminal probes into possible cutting of load-bearing members during plumbing work under SARAL approvals.

Overview

  • A four-storey building at G-4/152–153 in Rohini’s Sector 16 collapsed during heavy rain, an event that occurred on Wednesday, July 8, and triggered an immediate multi-agency emergency response.
  • Rescuers completed an overnight operation that recovered five survivors and three bodies, and one injured person was taken to hospital for treatment.
  • Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, NDRF, the MCD and revenue teams used JCBs, cranes, hydraulic cutters, oxygen and lighting to search the rubble while locals began ad hoc rescues before specialist teams arrived.
  • The MCD’s preliminary inspection reported plumbing work on site and possible drilling or cutting of columns or beams, and officials say a detailed technical examination will determine if those actions or construction quality caused the collapse.
  • The buildings had sanctioned plans under the MCD’s SARAL permit system, and police have registered a case to probe compliance, supervision by the project’s architect and engineer, and whether changes to the structure were authorised; officials have pledged assistance and possible compensation for victims.
