Unauthorized Entries to Germany Drop by Over a Third in 2024

Syria and Ukraine remain the top countries of origin as border controls and asylum applications decrease.

The number of unauthorized entries into Germany fell from 127,549 in 2023 to 83,572 in 2024, a reduction of over 34%.
Syria accounted for 20.6% of unauthorized entries in 2024, followed by Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
Only 23% of unauthorized entrants expressed intent to seek asylum in 2024, down from 44.7% in 2023.
German border controls, reintroduced in September 2024, have led to over 40,000 individuals being turned away, including likely asylum seekers.
Ukrainians, while exempt from asylum applications due to EU agreements, face restrictions if they have lived abroad for years and lack immediate protection needs.
