Overview

• At about 3:45 am on Sunday firefighters were called to a block on Calliope Street in Guildford after an alarm reported heavy smoke from unattended cooking
• Two occupants self-evacuated before crews arrived but one person—a man believed to be in his 60s—became critically unwell and died at the scene despite paramedic efforts
• Fire and Rescue NSW emphasised that the unit was filled with smoke rather than flames and warned about the rapid danger posed by kitchen smoke incidents
• A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed the victim’s age and said authorities have not yet identified which cooking appliance triggered the smoke
