UNAM Council Grants 14 Honoris Causa, Moves to Shield Rights in Tribunal Rule Overhaul

The package follows a review that eliminated Article 15, with Articles 2 and 17 paused pending new wording.

Overview

  • UNAM’s Consejo Universitario approved 14 doctorados honoris causa for figures including Michelle Bachelet, Julio Frenk, José Sarukhán, Dani Rodrik and Rafael Yuste.
  • The council deleted Article 15 of the Tribunal Universitario regulation and temporarily suspended Articles 2 and 17 to avoid interpretations that could affect freedom of expression, association and protest, passing the measures unanimously.
  • María de Lourdes Cruz González Franco was designated to the Junta de Gobierno in substitution of Rafael Lira Saade, whose term concluded by law.
  • The body granted the rank of investigadora emérita to Estela Mercedes Morales Campos and of profesores eméritos to Eduardo Bárzana García and Eduardo Antonio Chávez Silva.
  • The council also approved awarding the medalla Gabino Barreda to 200 high‑school and undergraduate students from the 2023–2024 cohorts, in a session held Monday at the Antigua Escuela de Medicina following two meetings convened.
