Particle News: UNAM Confirms Death of Astronomer and Science Communicator Julieta Fierro at 77

UNAM announced on September 19, 2025, that Julieta Fierro died at age 77.
She was a longtime researcher at UNAM’s Instituto de Astronomía and a professor at the Facultad de Ciencias.
She led national science outreach as director of Universum and as head of UNAM’s Divulgación de la Ciencia, publishing more than 40 books and creating exhibits and media.
Her recognitions included UNESCO’s Kalinga Prize, the Mario Molina medal, multiple doctorates honoris causa, and membership in the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua AmericanAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences.
No cause of death was disclosed, and she remained publicly active this month with a September 3 post on X and a September 4 talk at the Hay Festival in Querétaro.
