UN Warns of Afghan Deaths in Winter Without Adequate Shelter

Mass exodus from Pakistan leaves returnees vulnerable to harsh conditions, with aid agencies and Taliban providing support amid rising health concerns.

  • Almost half a million Afghans have left Pakistan since early October, following Islamabad's announcement to arrest and deport foreigners it claims are in the country illegally.
  • The UN refugee agency warns that many Afghan returnees, including women and children, could lose their lives in the harsh winter if left without adequate shelter.
  • Many returnees are arriving with illnesses due to the cold weather and the difficult journey from Pakistan, and may not have all their belongings, including clothing, to protect themselves from the elements.
  • Among those returning are families who have never lived in Afghanistan and may not have homes or extended family to return to. The agency will provide tents to such households.
  • The Taliban committee is distributing food, water, SIM cards, clothing, and cash at two key border crossings, Torkham and Spin Boldak. However, extreme temperatures and limited access to clean water and sanitation have led to a surge in infectious diseases and malnutrition.
