UN Warns Kordofan Risks Mass Atrocities as Fighting Spreads

The warning follows the fall of El Fasher, with UN monitors citing a pattern of sieges, starvation, indiscriminate strikes.

Overview

  • OHCHR reports at least 269 civilians killed in Kordofan since late October from airstrikes, shelling and summary executions, with outages likely masking higher tolls.
  • RSF captured Bara on 25 October and claims control of Babnusa in West Kordofan, a claim the army disputes.
  • Kadugli and Dilling face sieges by RSF and SPLM-N, famine is confirmed in Kadugli with risk in Dilling, and El Obeid is partially surrounded.
  • Documented attacks include an RSF drone strike that killed 45 mourners in El Obeid on 3 November and an SAF strike that killed at least 48 people in Kauda on 29 November.
  • More than 45,000 people have fled in recent weeks as hospitals falter and access is blocked; WHO counts nearly 1,700 health workers and patients killed since 2023, and Volker Türk urges a ceasefire, a halt to arms flows, protections for aid and restored telecommunications.
