Overview
- The United Nations released the 2026 Sustainable Development Goals report on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, and said governments face a $4 trillion per year financing gap to meet the 2030 targets.
- Of 139 SDG targets with trend data, the report found only 36% are on track, 49% are moving too slowly, and 15% have regressed compared with 2015 baselines.
- Official development assistance fell by a record 23.1% in 2025 and external debt for low- and middle-income countries reached $8.9 trillion in 2024, shrinking countries' room to fund services and investments.
- The shortfall is already producing real harms: about 10% of people live in extreme poverty, 2.3 billion face moderate or severe food insecurity, 673 million are chronically hungry, 273 million children remain out of school, and refugee numbers have more than doubled since 2015.
- UN leaders are urging urgent reform of the international financial architecture to scale multilateral development bank lending, deliver targeted debt relief, and refocus finance so the SDGs remain achievable by 2030.
