UN to Cut Peacekeeping Forces by 25% After Sharp U.S. Funding Reduction

UN officials cite a projected 16%–17% shortfall in the 2025–2026 peacekeeping budget.

Overview

  • The reduction will remove roughly 13,000 to 14,000 military and police personnel in the coming months.
  • Cuts will be distributed across the 11 active peacekeeping missions, with contingents and equipment repatriated.
  • Civilian staff within missions will also be reduced, according to a senior UN official who announced the plan.
  • Peacekeeping was budgeted at about $5.4 billion for July 2025 through June 2026, with $1.3 billion expected from the United States and $1.2 billion from China.
  • Washington has notified the UN it will contribute $682 million this year, including $85 million reserved for support to the new anti-gang effort in Haiti.
