UN Sounds Alarm on Darfur Catastrophe as RSF Tightens El Fasher Siege

UN officials say a protracted siege of El Fasher has pushed Darfur’s aid response to the brink.

Overview

  • Roughly 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, are trapped in El Fasher with no safe exits as RSF berms and checkpoints block movement and supplies.
  • IOM data show El Fasher’s population has fallen 62 percent to about 413,000 since the war began, with the city’s IDP count dropping 70 percent since March as Tawila swells to around 600,000 displaced people.
  • Humanitarian convoys carrying food and medicine have been stalled for months, at least 120 aid workers have been killed since 2023, and Sudan’s $4.2 billion response is only 25 percent funded.
  • Malnutrition, cholera and dengue are spreading in overcrowded sites, 87 percent of surveyed households reported needing healthcare, 78 percent could not access treatment, and more than 1,100 grave violations against children have been verified.
  • Violence is intensifying with a recent mosque drone strike that killed more than 70 people, NGOs and faith groups are urging evacuation corridors for civilians, and the ICC has convicted Ali Kushayb for early-2000s Darfur crimes.
