Overview
- The latest UN Security Council resolution deems Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara a serious, credible and realistic option and renews MINURSO for one year.
- Spain’s left remains divided since the government’s 2022 pivot toward Rabat, with Sumar and Podemos criticizing what they call a retreat from Sahrawi self-determination.
- A Sumar bill would grant Spanish nationality to Sahrawis born under Spanish administration before 1976 and their descendants and cut residency requirements from ten to two years, potentially benefiting up to about 200,000 people.
- The proposal advanced in committee with backing from PP, PNV, Junts, Podemos, Coalición Canaria, EH Bildu, ERC and BNG, with Vox abstaining and PSOE casting the only vote against, and Sumar says PSOE is blocking the required ponencia.
- Sumar has also filed a non-binding motion urging Spain to press for the UN-referenced referendum as EU legal rulings continue to invalidate EU–Morocco deals covering Western Sahara without Sahrawi consent.
