UN Security Council Sets Final Extension for UNIFIL, Orders One-Year Withdrawal After 2026

The compromise sets a firm end date to enable a Lebanese army takeover backed by international assistance.

Overview

  • The Security Council voted unanimously to renew the UN Interim Force in Lebanon through Dec. 31, 2026, then commence a one-year, orderly and safe drawdown and withdrawal.
  • During the drawdown, UNIFIL is authorized to protect UN personnel, maintain situational awareness near its locations, and support civilian protection and humanitarian delivery within its capacities.
  • The resolution aims for the Lebanese state to become the sole security provider in southern Lebanon and calls on Israel to withdraw forces from north of the Blue Line, including five positions in Lebanese territory.
  • The United States and Israel supported setting an end date, with acting U.S. ambassador Dorothy Shea saying Washington will back no further extensions, while European members and Lebanese officials insisted on a phased exit.
  • Lebanese leaders welcomed the compromise; the mission comprises roughly 10,800 personnel and has operated since 1978 with an expanded role after the 2006 Israel–Hezbollah war.
