UN Security Council Sets 2026 End Date for UNIFIL, Orders Full Withdrawal by 2027

A U.S.-backed compromise shifts security responsibility in southern Lebanon to Beirut.

Overview

  • The Council adopted a French-drafted resolution unanimously, extending UNIFIL’s mandate through December 31, 2026.
  • UNIFIL will retain limited roles through 2026, including protecting UN personnel, monitoring around its bases, and supporting humanitarian assistance.
  • The withdrawal is to be carried out over one year starting at the end of 2026 in close consultation with the Lebanese government to make it the sole security guarantor in the south.
  • Israel welcomed the decision, with UN ambassador Danny Danon calling it good news, while countries such as France, Ireland, and Austria had sought a longer extension.
  • The mission currently fields roughly 10,000 troops from about 50 countries, including Italy, after a year of heightened scrutiny that included attacks on UNIFIL bases in 2024.
